HONORING OUR FALLEN HEROES
Annual Colorado Fallen Firefighter Remembrance Ceremony
Lakewood, Colorado— On Saturday, May 9, firefighters, surviving family members, and citizens will gather to remember Colorado firefighters who have died in the line of duty. Currently 135 names are engraved on the Memorial to honor those men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice. One additional name, Lt. Brion Newkirk from Union Colony Fire Authority in Greeley, Colorado, will be added to the Memorial in 2009.
Lt. Newkirk, 47, died suddenly on February 27, 2009 as a result of an on-the-job injury he sustained while treating an injured citizen of Greeley. He was a thirteen year veteran of the Greeley department, as well as a past Fire Chief of the Western Hills Fire Department. Brion is survived by his wife Sheila, and children, Kristen, Craig, and Kelly.
The annual event begins with a Colorado fire apparatus procession at 10:30 a.m. The route begins on Garrison Street in Lakewood proceeding eastbound to West Alameda Avenue. The route then heads south down Alameda and turns westbound on South Allison Parkway, passing the location of the Colorado Fallen Firefighter Memorial. Citizens are welcome watch throughout the route or wait for the procession at the Memorial site. Citizens driving in the area should be aware that Lakewood Police will be performing a moving road block along these streets during the fire apparatus procession.
The Annual Remembrance Ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. at the Memorial site (adjacent to the Lakewood Library at 445 S. Allison Parkway, Lakewood in the Belmar Park.) The event will feature speakers from the fire service, as well as music from the Colorado Emerald Society Pipes and Drums, and a combined Honor Guard from fire departments across the State.
The Colorado Fallen Firefighters Foundation is dedicated to honoring all firefighters who have lost their lives protecting the lives and property of the people of Colorado.

Local 888 would like to thank all of you who came out to pay respects to Lt. Brion Newkirk. Brion was a friend to all of us and a respected member of Union Colony Fire and Greeley Firefighters Local 888. He was a tremendous paramedic and well respected as both firefighter and paramedic.
Thank you to all who attended.
The International Association of Firefighters has deemed Brion's death as Line of Duty. They have announced that his name will be inscribed on the wall of the IAFF Fallen Firefighter Memorial in Colorado Springs. The ceremony will take place in September and more information can be found at www.IAFF.org .
